‘Puttu-then’: a holistic superfood for all seasons!

Stingless bee honey got its epithet ‘Puttu-then’ from the languages spoken around the Western Ghats of Kerala, India, which can be translated as ‘Mud hive honey’. Being stingless, Meliponines, or stingless honey bees, find their habitat in the lower reaches of the ground as a defence behaviour or mechanism. Their survival instincts make them build their combs inside crevices like tree trunks, termite mud, or deep burrows. Most of the stingless bee honey is harvested from the honeycombs found in the jungle inside the layers or crevices of the termite mud nests, or ‘Puttu’ in native tongues, thus the name ‘Puttu-then’. The mud nests of termites significantly influence the medicinal values of stingless bee honey as they are the richest sources of vital minerals and mysterious healing properties. Ayurveda and Siddha scholars strictly recommend the use of ‘Puttu-then’ in their medicinal concoctions for better results.

Stingless bees make the honey from the nectar of wildflowers, and most of them comprise numerous medicinal values, which makes ‘Puttu-then’ the source of mysterious healing qualities. ‘Puttu-then’ gets the darker pigmentation from the highest concentration of phytonutrients such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds. These compounds provide antioxidant properties to honey that inhibit and reduce free radicals in the human body, which prevent oxidation stress and damage to cells. The immunomodulatory abilities of phenolic compounds make “Puttu-then” highly effective in anti-inflammatory therapy. Inflammation plays a major role in cancer progression, so being anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory, it is antiproliferative and anti-cancerous. It also prevents infections with its antimicrobial and antibacterial abilities. ‘Puttu-then’ is a holistic remedy and healthy food for all seasons.

Natural sweetness, wild floral goodness...

The basics you need to know about honey:

  • Raw honey is the best form of honey to get its real therapeutic benefits. Raw honey loses its natural properties when heated above 40°C (104°F) or used as a substitute for sugar in cooking. It’s an all-season superfood serving immunity, vitality, and energy that will infuse healthy sweetness into your snacks and salads.
  • The presence of antibiotics produced in the bodies of bees, insufficient water content (17%), and the antibacterial and anti-fungicidal properties make raw honey an intolerable environment for microorganisms and bacteria. The absence of microorganisms keeps honey from getting spoiled for a long time.
  • Exposure to sunlight and cold temperature doesn’t cause any harm to honey’s natural properties, It will not crystalized since it is in the purest form.
